Constitution of the

Ballston Spa Temperance Society

Pledge

We whose names are hereunto annexed, believing that the use of intoxicating liquors as a beverage is not only needless but hurtful to the social, civil and religious interests of man, that it tends to form intemperate appetites and habits, and while it is continued the evils of intemperance can never be done away with, Do therefore agree that we will not use it or traffic in it, that we will not provide it for the entertainment of persons in our company or employ, and that in all suitable ways we will discountenance the use of it throughout the community.

Article 1st: We do hereby adopt the above pledge of the American and New York State Temperance Societies and in order the more effectually to carry out it principles, believing union to be strength, Do form ourselves into a society to be known as the Ballston Spa Temperance Society, and any person may become a member thereof by subscribing their names to this pledge and constitution.

Article 2d: The officers of this society shall be a president, three v. presidents, a secretary and treasurer who shall discharge the duties usually devolving on those officers, they shall also be an executive committee, any two of whom with the secretary may form a quorum to transact all business belonging to this society between its meetings, and call special meetings of the society, and shall hold their offices respectively until the next annual meeting or until others are elected.

Article 3d: This society shall be auxiliary to the Saratoga County Temperance Society, provided that all our members in good standing may be also members of that society. Our executive committee shall make an annual report to the executive committee of the county society, of the condition and progress of the temperance cause within their limits; it shall also be their duty to try and establish an efficient temperance society in each school district of the town.

Article 4th: Any person who is a member of any total abstinence society, and in good standing in this town, may by virtue thereof be a member of this society, when the name of such person shall be entered on this roll.

Article 5th: This constitution may be altered or modified at any regular meeting of the society if a majority of all the members present vote [for] it, And bylaws may be made which do [not] contravene the objects of this constitution.

Article 6th: The sole object of this society is to promote the cause of temperance, and no other business or discussion shall be had at any of its meetings but such as are calculated to advance this cause.

Article 7th: Any member who shall yield to the wiles of the enemy, and break the pledge, shall be dealt with according to the bylaws of the society.

At a regular meeting of the society in August 1842 the following officers were duly elected: Philip H. McOmber, President; Samuel R. Garrett, v. President; E. St. John; v. Pres't; N. Hanson, v. Pres't; Wm H. Middlebrook, Secretary and Treasurer.

At an annual meeting of this society held at the Court House in Ballston Spa on the evening of the 21st September 1843: Eliphalet St. John was elected President; P. G. Osborn, Charles Kirk, Abram L. Wright V. Presidents; and Alexander J. Spencer, secretary and treasurer, all for ensuing year.

At a regular meeting of the society, the following addition was made to the pledge by vote of the Society:

"And we will use every suitable measure to restore those who may have fallen victims to intemperate habits, and all those who have again relapsed."
