This page serves as an index to the marriages from the year 1879 as reported in newspaper columns which Cornelius Durkee faithfully collected and pasted into scrapbooks. He used mostly the local Saratoga Springs newspapers, but occasionally had access to others such as a Ballston Spa, Albany, Troy, or Glens Falls paper. His Scrapbook #1 contains several years worth of the columns for marriages and deaths, supplemented with some obituaries and short biographical articles, plus occasional articles about weddings or funerals. Mr. Durkee's efforts in collecting these "vital records" predates the 1880 New York State law which began statewide efforts at collection of official vital records. This scrapbook, as are many others compiled by Durkee, is located at the Saratoga County Historian's Office in Ballston Spa.
Most of these marriages occurred in Saratoga County, but there were some reported from outside the county and some from outside New York State: in a case such as that, there usually was a stated connection back to a former residence here or to a family still living in Saratoga County.
The "Marriages" columns rarely included more than a date and location. A marriage was usually reported with only the name of the groom, name of the bride, the date and the location specific only to the town, such as "in Clifton Park," or "in this city" in which the newspaper was published. Parents' names were infrequently added, although inclusion of the name of the minister performing the ceremony was not uncommon. Since this is merely an index to the clippings, locations and names other than the principals are not listed here. The location within the Durkee scrapbook collection is given if more information is needed: the citation "Saratogian? (Durkee 1:4)" indicates that the newspaper is presumed to be the Saratogian and the clipping is found in Scrapbook #1 on page 4.
It must be observed that this probably is only a portion of the marriages occurring in Saratoga County during 1878. Probably there were many which were not published in the newspapers, including many marriages of Saratoga County residents which took place outside the county: marriages in Schenectady likely are under-represented, for example, although residents of Southern Saratoga County might easily have traveled there to work, to church or to be married.
