Saratoga County Census

Census schedules are an excellent source for genealogists, particularly the 1850 and later census schedules which listed names of all members of a household.

Federal Census population schedules are available on microfilm for Saratoga County for the census years from 1800 through 1880 and 1900 through 1920. The 1790 census is available in book form and is indexed. Commercial firms have indexed the Federal Census for the entire state of New York for the years 1850, 1860 and 1870, and Soundex index microfilms are available for 1880, 1900 and 1920.

The State of New York also conducted a statewide census of its population every ten years from 1825 through 1875, filling in conveniently halfway between the Federal census years. New York next again conducted a census in 1892, then resumed its ten year schedule in 1905 through 1915 and 1925. Availability of the state census schedules for Saratoga County begins only as early as 1855, but all later state census schedules are available on microfilm.

We are proceeding with our project of transcribing the 1855 New York State census schedules of all the towns of Saratoga County. This census is particularly useful in that it provides not only the name of each member of the household, but also that individual's relationship to the head-of-household plus the birthplace of each individual. This birthplace was directed to be listed as a state or country unless the person was born in New York, in which case it was to list the county of birth. Another column in this schedule recorded the length of time that person resided in the town in which he was being listed in 1855. This data helps in reconstructing the movements of families during a time when population was becoming much more mobile, and therefore sometimes more difficult to trace.

Similarly the 1865 New York State census, taken at the close of the Civil War, includes exceptionally useful information. We will be preparing a county-wide index of the names of citizens listed in the 1865 State Census of Saratoga County, with each entry in the index linked to an image of the page on which that name appears.
