Victory Cemetery or Victory Mills Cemetery, also once known as the Loomis Cemetery, and sometimes referred to as "the factory cemetery" or "the village cemetery" is located in the Village of Victory, Town of Saratoga, Saratoga County, New York State.
It is one of three cemeteries along the street appropriately named Cemetery Avenue. From the Victory Mill, on Route 32 in Victory, turn up Pond Street, and then turn right at the top of the hill to Cemetery Avenue, and Victory Cemetery will be the first cemetery, on your left. Or from the Saratoga Battle Monument, in Schuylerville, Victory Cemetery will be on your right, the third cemetery, after passing by Prospect Hill and Visitation B.V.M. cemeteries. Watch for the chain link fence, which runs across the front of Victory Cemetery.
Victory Cemetery was established in 1846 by the Saratoga Victory Manufacturing Company, the 'Victory Mills'. The earliest inscriptions date that same year, 1846. Victory Village was incorporated in 1849. A deed dated 21 Sept 1853 and recorded 8 April 1854 in Saratoga County Deed Book 68 page 74, transferred the ownership of the land from the Saratoga Victory Manufacturing Company to the Trustees of the Village of Victory "to be used as a public cemetery and for such purposes only."
Unfortunately, this cemetery was not recorded by Cornelius Durkee. In fact, to date, I have found no record of the epitaphs prior to my preliminary survey in 1993. Numerous stones are broken, extremely worn and difficult to read or they have fallen over and become buried. In some cases, the base or foundation remains, but the stone is currently missing. Unquestionably, restoration work would yield much additional information and help preserve what currently remains. Many of the stones and monuments need to be repaired and reset, but others are to the point of needing to be replaced by new granite markers. The old marble, which must have been beautiful, a century ago, did not withstand the test of time. Fortunately, the grounds of the cemetery are in much better condition now than previously, when neglect threatened to overtake the cemetery entirely.
In the mid 1800's, Irish Catholic potato famine immigrants found work at the mills and many of the first generation are buried at Victory Cemetery. Subsequent generations of these families are frequently found at the nearby Visitation B.V.M. or Notre Dame Cemeteries. Inscriptions for the same person can sometimes be found at more than one cemetery. In some cases, the bodies were removed from the village to the church cemeteries; however, I find no record of the removals in the existing Victory cemetery records. Existing known records consist of two original deed books and a reconstructed cemetery lot map.
At least four of the stones in this cemetery were signed by the stone masons:
Hoyt, stone mason of the George & Charles See double stone, 1859;
M. Fannan, stone mason of the Catherine Tierney Hartigan stone, 1863;
T. Harrington, stone mason of the Samuel Nevitt stone, circa 1863; and
T.H. Devine, stone mason of the Estella Francis & Julia Ann ? double stone, 1877.
This is by no means a complete list of the interments at Victory Cemetery, but only a list of inscriptions recorded to date, and clearly there are many more people buried here than names on this list. Some names reappear when a buried stone is recovered, or when the fragments of a broken stone are pieced together. Other names have apparently vanished with the wooden crosses, which marked many graves at an earlier date.
